"Let's
go to the Forest of Blackbark," you say. Kaytara
frowns.
"Do
you really want to go there?" she says. You
nod. Kaytara sighs, and sets out.
In
a few minutes the nature around you begins to change.
The green trees change to dark red, and clouds cover
the sky. This place smells of darkness.
Suddenly
a shrill, soultearing wail fills the air. Kaytara
drops to her knees, shaking. You slowly get down,
too, and watch the place where the sound came from.
Then,
you see it. A large, dark figure rises among the
trees. It reminds a horse with... bat wings. The
nightmare rears with that same bloodcurdling scream,
and rises into the air, flapping its wings loudly.
You realise why Kaytara doesn't like this place.
Still,
you're curious to see the babies. You ask Kaytara,
but she shakes her head.
"I
won't lead you to the foals, I dare not. But you
can call one of the nightmares. There are a few
here that are not really savage. Just call Ethiexa.
I'll go now. Meet me at the Stone Field."
With
that, Kaytara trots away hurriedly.
Suddenly
wings flap around you, and savage red eyes emerge from
the darkness. Several dozens nightmares surround
you, no longer threatened by the presence of a unicorn.
Their red eyes gleam with hunger, and you
suddenly realise your life is in danger.
One
of the nightmares rears with a scream, and jumps
at you. Luckily, you dodge the crashing hooves.
Now several more nightmares have found the courage
to attack.
"Ethieeexa!!!"
you yell, hardly dodging another strike. The echo
carries on, 'exa, exa,
exa.' Then,
another nightmare rears, and you realise you don't
have the time to move. But before the beast brings
her hooves upon you, another scream fills the air.
The nightmares stop and look around, to see another
nightmare flying towards you. She has a beautiful
purple mane.
She
neighs something to the others, and they retreat,
looking sorry they didn't finish you several seconds
earlier. Ehiexa turns to you and says,
"Are
you alright?"
You
nod, and thank her for saving your life.
"So,
I suppose you want to adopt one of our babies?"
she says. You don't say anything.
"Don't
worry, only the wild nightmares are that savage,
adopted and human-raised creatures are actually
nice," she adds.
"And
you?" you say, thinking that this nightmare
is probably wild, too.
"Me?
I've been abandoned," the mare says sadly.
"I was one of the first nightmares ever adopted
here. I used to have an owner, a really nice
one. I lived on a nice page, the owner even put
food and water on it, but then he decided to change
me for a strange creature called a pokemon, and
I went back here."
"That's
awful," you say, and promise yourself, that
if you adopt a nightmare, you'll take care of it
and won't exchange it for some goofy pokemon.
"So,"
the mare says, "you want to adopt a foal? And
has Kaytara told you, that you can adopt dark wolves
here?"
